Magickally, it is use for purification and cleansing an area of unwanted energy and negative influences. On a practical level, it is used to physically sweep the are for the Circle before casting. Many witches will also place a broom outside of their door with the brushy side up to ward off evil spirits and to stop unwanted outside energies from entering the home.
